What is the difference between LPG and Natural gas?
LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) is a mixture of a number of hydrocarbons primarily consisting of mixes of propane and butane. LPG has a very low boiling point so in order to prevent evaporation the gas is stored under very high pressure where it becomes a liquid.
LPG is heavier than air so it will naturally tend to flow to the floor. This characteristic is why leaking LPG is so dangerous, particularly in the home , caravan or cabin.
As most people sleep in relatively small confined spaces (and low to the floor) the consequences of an LPG leak can be tragic.
Natural Gas is a fuel consisting mostly of methane. When it is required as a fuel it must be purified to remove a number of other constituents, namely ethane, propane, butane and sulphur among others. Natural gas can be very hazardous with its potential to ignite and cause explosions.
Natural Gas is lighter than air so it tends to dissipate into the atmosphere. However when it is used in a confined space , such as a building, caravan, office, kitchen, loungeroom etc.. the gas concentration can increase beyond its lower explosive limit (between 5 and 15% in air) . In the presence of any ignition source this can create an explosion.
Although not strickly poisonous to the human body it can become lethal when concentrations build up to such a level that it displaces air (oxygen) causing asphyxiation.
Gas alarm with shut-off valve is widely used in residential. It's designed as gas pipe breaker for emergency use. Once the gas sensor detect the gas, it will remote shut down on gas supply to ensure the safety .

- Will my current smoke detector alert me if there is a gas leak ?
No! Smoke detectors work on the priciple of detecting particulates in the air. Leaking gas will not trigger a smoke alarm.
- I use both LPG and Natural gas. Can I install a single gas alarm shut-off valve to detect both an LPG and a Natural gas leak.. ?
No! The complex detector systems in the alarm are specific for each type of gas. Also as LPG is heavier than air and natural Gas is lighter than air, placing the alarm low to the floor will mean it would be unlikely to detect a natural gas leak. Conversely placing an alarm on the ceiling is unlikely to detect an LPG leak (unless the gas leak is a massive one and or has continued for a long time.
- How long do the units last ?
Even though the units will operate for at least 5 years we recommend 5 years as the replacement frequency to guarantee optimum performance of the sensor.
- Where do I locate the unit... ?
The LPG gas alarm shut-off valve should be placed low down on a wall or panel within 300mm of the floor and within 2 to 4 metres of the appliance or gas source.
The Natural gas alarm shut-off valve should be placed about 300mm below the ceiling and within 2 to 4 metres of the appliance or gas source.
- The following locations should be avoided.
Areas subject to strong ventilation such as open windows, exhaust fans etc
Areas subject to moisture.
Areas where the detector is covered or blocked from clean air.
Areas involving high temperatures or excessive amounts of smoke.
